御茶ノ水祈祷会 OCHANOMIZU PRAYER WALK
Ochanomizu means "tea water," referring back to the area's historical significance as a source of water for the Shogun's tea ceremonies during the Edo period (1603-1868) establishing it as an important location for the ruling class. From the homes on this hilltop, you could look down on the Imperial Palace and all the rest of Tokyo with Mt. Fuji far in the distance. In the late 1800s, Japan underwent political upheaval with the sudden opening to the Western world, and the lands of the aristocracy were repurposed for education and universities. Used shops began to pop up all over the neighborhood to meet the needs of the growing populations of college students. In the 1950s, many US military families left Japan and sold their used guitars to students in the area. Rock and roll began to grow in popularity around this time and so did the desire for guitars and other band instruments. Slowly, the area became known as “Guitar Alley” and continues to be the foremost area in all of Tokyo to buy musical instruments.
The land under Ochanomizu Christian Center (OCC) was bought for a pittance following the fire bombings of World War II by missionary Irene Webster Smith from the UK. She established it as the center for college ministry to all of the students in the area. Since then, it has become the main hub for Christian offices and ministries for all of Tokyo and Japan. Ochanomizu Christian Center has blessed many churches and ministries with its vision to help the growth of the kingdom of God in Japan.
